We love to play casino games but roulette has a special place in our heart. There is something alluring about the spin of the roulette wheel that makes us come back to the game again and again. Roulette has been played for hundreds of years and enthusiasts have always been trying different tricks and strategies to come away from the game on top.
In this article, we are going to look at some awesome ways to increase your odds at the roulette table in the modern casino.
I’m sure that you have seen some of the crazy claims on the internet with systems that allege you can win at roulette every time. Of course, we all know that this is utter nonsense. If players knew how to win roulette every time the casinos would soon be out of business and really if you invented a winning roulette system that allowed you to always win would you share it?
But that is not to say there are ways of narrowing the odds you’ll also find that different strategies might work better for you than others. Below are 6 roulette tricks that will make your bankroll last longer followed by 4 roulette strategy systems that you can try out next time you are at a casino.
With all casino games, the odds are firmly in their favour, for this reason, we need to find ways to give us more chances to win at roulette. Try out some of our tips below to even things up a little.
Avoid American Roulette
We realize that if you are playing at a land-based casino you don’t always have the choice of which roulette game you can play. But at the majority of online casinos, you’ll get the choice to play European Roulette and often other variations including French Roulette. With American roulette, you have an extra zero pocket on the roulette wheel resulting in a house edge of 5.26%. European roulette with just a single zero pocket is the better option to play with a house edge of 2.70% making the odds much more favourable.
If you have no choice but to play American roulette there is a bet that you definitely should not play as it has the worst odds in roulette. this is the 5 number wager on 0, 00, 1, 2, 3 and has a house edge of 7.89%
Watch the Roulette Wheel
This is not something you can do when playing online but if you are at a brick and mortar casino you can look out for wheel bias. This is when due to wear and tear of the roulette wheel the ball tends to land in one particular section of the wheel making the game more predictable. Most casinos regularly check on the equipment to prevent this from happening but you never know if you have an eagle eye you might just get lucky! You can also watch the croupier, they have been trained to vary their actions when spinning the ball but you might find one is predictable.
Play The Best Even Money Bet
A lot of roulette players like to play the outside bets, though the odds are low they stand more chance of winning. Though there is no advantage mathematically when you choose to play the even money bets, you can give yourself an advantage by placing two of the bets that pay 2:1. If you place a bet on two of the three dozen bets you will have covered 24 roulette numbers rather than just 18. With a 33% increase in the chance of winning it’s worth wagering on.
Play an Aggressive Dozens Bet
This is similar to the bet played above though a little bit more aggressive and riskier. This time you make three bets on the dozen bets 1-12, 13-24, 25-36 you’ll cover all the numbers on the tables except for the zero bet or if you are playing American roulette additionally the double zero. As they all pay 2:1 odds you need to vary how much you will bet on each one. So 1-12 you would bet 3 x the minimum, 13-24 bet 2 x the minimum and on 25-36 just the one minimum table bet. You are banking on it hitting 1-24 if so you’ll come out on top and can one of the higher bets on the table. If the 25-36 bet comes in your loss is just 3 times the minimum. If a zero is hit you’ll lose all three wagers.
Play Roulette at a Reputable Online Casino
While nothing beats the atmosphere of a land-based casino it isn’t feasible for most of us to spend lots of time at one. So the convenience of online casinos makes them a great place to enjoy exciting roulette games while we dream of our next trip to Niagara or Vegas. Online casinos will stop you from getting rusty and you can play real money games and hone your roulette strategies on the free games as well. You also now have the live dealer games which offer the interactive fun of real roulette without all the incidental costs. If you choose to play at one of our recommended casino sites you’ll find that it is safe, trustworthy and will have a wide range of roulette games available. As well as this they offer some of the best bonuses to get you started and boost your bankroll!
Out of all the tips, tricks and strategies, this is the one thing that will have the most benefit when playing roulette games for real money. To begin with, we suggest separating your casino money from your daily living expenses and bills, setting up a separate bank account might be a good idea. You’ll then need to decide how much you can afford to spend on roulette without eating into your other expenses. This will be an amount that you can safely lose and walk away from that won’t impact any other part of your life financially and emotionally.
When it comes to betting and bankroll management it is best to go slow and steady, don’t bet too much at once and be consistent in your gameplay. If you are having a run of bad luck it’s probably the time to walk away from the table and come back another day when fate is on your side.
Roulette Strategies & Systems
When you play at the roulette table you are in the hands of fate, the game is designed to be as unpredictable as possible. If you are on a losing streak and luck isn’t on your side that day a roulette strategy system won’t necessarily reverse your fortune. But in our mind having a strategy is better than just randomly placing bets hoping that you will win! Imagine if a general went into battle with no strategy in place, hoping he would win by randomly deploying his troops, we sure know how that would work out!
Sometimes a certain betting strategy will work out well for one person while it will be a total loss for another. That’s why you will see so many conflicting opinions on the different strategy systems.
In our view, your best option is to sign up to a casino site and play online roulette for free and test some of the strategies out before playing for big money. You can try all the different strategies below and other famous systems and get a feel for each one and reach your own conclusions on how effective they are or not.
The Big Number Roulette Strategy
In this strategy, you bet on a straight-up number or numbers. When you view a scoreboard in roulette it shows the last twenty numbers that have been hit. And almost always some numbers are repeated, this isn’t anything special as with all random games numbers tend to repeat. Even over a short amount of spins, you can expect this to occur.
With this strategy, you wager on the number that has been repeated, if there is more than one then bet on them as well. The betting strategy for this method is to either play what is your regular bet if it is just one number but if there are other repeater numbers then place the minimum bet on them.
With the big number strategy, you need to follow the scoreboard. If a number doesn’t reappear on the scoreboard you stop betting on it. If there isn’t a number repeating you sit out and wait until one shows.
You can also mix things up a bit and bet on numbers that have hit or numbers that haven’t appeared on the scoreboard. This negative strategy is a bit tougher, tracking the numbers that haven’t hit might require you to write them down. You’ll also make your own decision on how many of these non-repeated or hit numbers you’ll bet on.
There are other variations on the big number strategy you can try out if you want the chance of hitting more frequently. This would involve wagering on the outside bets such as the red and black, odd and even, high and low and dozen bets.
So for instance, if we were playing European Roulette and the number that is repeated is a 7, this is also an odd number, red, with a low number [1-18] and is in the 1st dozen [1-12] You now have the choice of playing a combination of any of these bets which will give you anywhere between 1 and 4 different wagers to play. For those who like to play on the aggressive side then you could add the straight-up bet of ‘7’ as well! If you don’t want to go crazy with your bankroll on this then you could stick to the table minimum for each bet.
Where this last method doesn’t work to plan is if you are betting on more than one repeat number so assuming there were two repeat numbers on the scoreboard a ‘7’ and a ’17’ one being red and one black and one being in the 1st dozen and the other being in the 2nd dozen. In this case, you would go for their commonalities such as both being low numbers and both of them odds.
The martingale strategy is popular with many players and is probably the strategy that is used the most. While it has it’s cheerleaders and detractors both sides will agree that it’s a simple roulette strategy to learn. The Martingale strategy is used on the even [1:1] outside bets; red or black bets, even or odd bets, low numbers 1-18 and high numbers 19-36.
Ideally, for the Martingale, you want a table that has a low minimum bet and a high maximum. As we have already mentioned it is easy to use and doesn’t need any mathematical calculations. All the player does is place a minimum bet on one of the even bets, if the player wins he bets the same minimum wager again. If the player loses they double the wager and place it on the same bet and this carries on until they win again and then they start afresh with the minimum bet. This is then repeated until the end of the roulette session.
To give an example if you bet $2 to begin and lost you would bet $4 if you lost again you’d double your bet to $8 if you now win you’d go back to your initial bet of $2 and repeat the process.
As with any roulette strategy, there are pros and cons to the Martingale method. The advantages are that it is easy to learn and can be played at online and real casinos, The disadvantages are that if you have a long run of losses you might reach the betting limit of the table therefore not being able to cover your losses.
James Bond Strategy
This high rolling strategy is described as ‘flawless’ by its creator Ian Fleming, who as you might well know is the author of the James Bond novels. 007 used this method at the roulette table in the first James Bond novel Casino Royale. If you want to follow in the footsteps of this famous risk-taker here is how it works.
Bond played with £200 but you could easily do the same with a dollar amount and if you aren’t a high roller you can still play with a lot small amount depending on the table minimums. So with the James Bond roulette strategy, I’m going to assume you will play with $20 so you’d split your bet up as follows; $14 on the high numbers bet [19-36], $5 on numbers 13 to 18 and $10 for insurance on the 0. The strategy is that you are covering most of the roulette table with bets. If the ball hit 19 to 36 you’ll win $8, if it hits 13 to 18 you’ll win $10 and if it lands on the 0 you’ll win $16. But if it lands on any of the other numbers, 1 to 12 say goodbye to your $20. As you can see the major flaw with this system is if there is a run of low numbers between 1 and 12 you could hit a bad losing streak and get through your bankroll pretty quickly.
Fibonacci Roulette Strategy
This strategy is ideal for conservative players who want to play it safe. It’s based on a famous sequence of numbers that has many other applications in addition to being used as a roulette system. With the Fibonacci sequence, the next number is the sum of the two previous. So it looks like this; 1, 1, 2, 3,5, 8, 13, 21, and so on.
Similar to the Martingale this a betting system that can only be used with even paying bets, red and black, odd and even, high and low. You’ll start by betting the minimum. if you win you’ll increase it by one, and you’ll increase your stake by two if you win again and so on following the sequence. Once you lose a hand you start at the beginning of the sequence again and follow the same betting pattern.
This is an easy and safe strategy to play and is best for those who enjoy low stakes roulette, if you are a high stakes player then this isn’t likely the strategy for you.
Roulette Tricks FAQ
If you want to make your bankroll last longer and the chance of winning more often then stick to the outside bets. These are wagers such as red/black, odd/even, high/low and the ‘dozens’ bet.
You’ll see all different numbers regarded as the ‘hottest’ number on the roulette wheel but really there isn’t one. Unless the roulette wheel has some bias or is rigged the outcome of the numbers will be random. Even more so if you are playing instant play roulette games at an online casino as they use a random number generator to decide on the winning number.
Progressive betting strategies in roulette are when you increase your bet at the end of each round an example of progressive betting would be the Martingale strategy.
